La Lauda di Francesco

 Laude des Heiligen Franziskus

in musica parole e danza

The Lauda "Francesco"

By Silvia Parma

“I am the troubadour and I always go for Countries and cities. Before departing, let me sing...”. And with these words that Angelo Branduardi opens his show entirely devoted to St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most charismatic figures of the history of the Catholic religion that, as Jesus Christ, lived in a community with 12 male companions, but also female companions, he used to pray also in vulgar with the ability of a consumed actor, using music and songs, and he used to make miracles to give back the life, the smile and the hope to his similar.
Already in the year 2000 with the album “L'infinitamente Piccolo” -infinitely Small- (which realitation has included names of international value as Morricone, Battiato, Madredeus, Muvrini and the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare) the artist had completed a trip of great historical  and artistic beauty, putting in music the life of the Saint on the words of ancient writings drawn by the Franciscan Sources that documents the deeds of him.

Also this show is inspired to ancient sources, the Lauda, in fact, was a theatrical form developed  in Umbria in the century XIII.
Now the same music and the same texts are accompanied by dance and recited, to give more pathoses and more completeness to this trip that St. Francis has made above all inside proper soul and of all those people whom he has met and spellbound with his works and his words.

The stage is soberly furnished, even if a careful eye can perceive that the images the forms and the colors are inspired by the paintings of Giotto.
Few musicians (4 at all, included Branduardi), but each of them alternates more instruments, giving space to that music whose beauty is contained in the same beauty of the sounds and in the technical and interpretative ability of whom produces them.

The great merit of Branduardi in this show and of whom has assisted it in the choreographies and in the customs has been that to make the Saint for what he really was, a young man, or better a boy (we remind you that St. Francis is dead on October 3th 1226, aged 44, after twenty years of preachings) pregnant of a great faith and of an immense humanity, that expressed this anxiety of his search of the Communion with the man and the nature in its deeper sense through an enthusiasm, a disturbance and a physicist typical of his age.
The movements of Francis and his disciples  seems to be dictated by the rhytme of the earth or by the deepest heart of it, the hands and the limbs seems to be in the continuous search of a contact that from the physicist transmits to the spirit the true essence of our existence and our communion with God.

Everything is rendered with the apparent simplicity of whom is telling a fable to a child, and as children the ballet dancer companions of Francis pulsate in the heart, in the physicist, in the soul and in the earth with the naivety of whom is discovering the life with the eyes but also with the senses.
Messages and clear allegories, but at the same time deep and suggestive to transmit the torment of these young souls to the comparison with something greater of them, but also their enthusiasm for the life and desire to transmit it to the proper  similars with that joy of living that they use to call Faith in the Lord; the same Branduardi at a certain point leaves his angle of minstrel narrator to enter into the history; a brief instant, as of whom wants simply to participate and not only to tell, to make free to the history of his own joy to be man.

“To understand, More than to be understood”, “to be Kind”, “to live with lightness”. The words of Francis are a hymn to the life and to fully joy of it, because only in this way we can love it deeply, and with it to love ourselves and our similars. Francis teaches, of course, the renouncement, but to the distractions that brings the man toward that would risk to be the true renouncement, that is the to deny ourselves the deepest experience of own spirituality through the terrestrial experience, living in a intereaction with the men and the things, looking for the unique essence of it: the love, that brings to the knowledge. The same essence. The man that connects  to God and therefore to  own spirit. Francis and his companions are ascetics, it is true, but their bodies are well alive and careful and they pulsate to everything with the same heart of the world, in an experience both physics than spiritual.
“You put the Good and you will see that the evil disappears”. In the show, themes of great actuality are touched, amazing analogies are apparently perceived between epoches and distant cultures among them. Perhaps because the man is also such through the centuries? The wickedness, the war, the ecology, the peace, the solidarity. In an only one choir that together it sings the love for the Life and the Hope, that it doesn't have to ever die, to be able to turn into something of really unique and beautiful.

Music by Angelo Branduardi, Lyrics by Luisa Zappa Branduardi and the screen-play by Stefania Garibaldi.

Musik: Angelo Branduardi, Texte: Luisa Zappa Branduardi, Inszenierung: Stefania Garibaldi.
